Reflection Report #4

“Process behind results-The magic of video editing”

I. Details of the event/activity

The webinar is entitled, “Process behind results-The magic of video editing.” This webinar event was hosted by the RestART (studio and group) from Gordon College. It was held on December 11, 2022. The webinar’s venue was held via google meet and the guest speaker for that webinar is Mr. Den Ayeroun Miranda, a filmmaker.

II. Reflections on the webinar/activity give rise to (learnings)

Mr. Den Ayeroun Miranda is a filmmaker and I am glad for the opportunity to listen to him and what his knowledge when it comes to films and video editing. For him, video editing is just the manipulation of arrangement of videos, as he said “Video editing is an art of storytelling”, because video editing is also knowing how to tell the story to people through visual elements and something that they will understand what you make them watch. He said as an example is, having a client that sends you videos, something that he didn’t shoot and he has to review each and every one of the footages to see what he can make that fits the theme of what he needs to do. How will you tell people through a video what’s happening in the event video, film, etc.

It was mentioned too, that you don’t need nice equipment to be able to be a good video maker. Even if all you have is a cellphone, you can be able to make something with it. I understand that because, even with limited resources, you can be creative or use what you can and have. Having a nice camera, a nice pc set-up is just a bonus, for comfortability and if you’re a professional it really is important, but if you’re starting out, you can just have a phone and a simple video editing software and try to see what you can do and how you are going to tell a story.

III. Reflections on possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a practical level (practical application of learnings)

I, myself is interested in the subject of video editing because I think it is a nice skill to have and you can be creative with it and can be used in a lot of things. I do video editing from time to time, either for school, for social media posts, or something for myself. Videos are all around us, movies, commercials, social media videos, tv shows and the reason they are enjoyable to look at or watch is because of the people behind it, those that create and edit so the output would look nice and that people will be drawn to it and that is why I think video editing is a skill and job that deserves a lot of respect and appreciation.

I love the idea that you can use it as a powerful tool to be able to create a visually stunning output, something people will engage with and feel things and see things in a different perspective. It is an overall experience given by the video editors.

IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)

I like how direct and comfortable this webinar is, like the speaker is direct to the point and says what he needs to say without too much complication in saying the idea he has. You also get to learn a lot, and makes you want to listen more because of his positive outlook towards the subject and how it seems to be something that he is passionate about which goes forward to the audience

V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/consider for future activities

While the webinar is fine, it is too short, like there are many things and tips that could have been said but was cut too short and that there could have been a short demonstration when it comes to video editing. Also, the video the organizers were trying to show, it was hard to see because of how much lag it has so I didn’t get to appreciate the video as much and hoping that they’ll find a way next time to showcase something without too much problems.
