Webinar Series on Basic Computer Animation Day 3: 3D Animation Concepts
Reflection Report #2
Webinar Title: "Webinar Series on Basic Computer Animation Day 3: 3D Animation Concepts"
I. Details of the
event/activity
The
webinar entitled” 3D Animation Concepts” is Day 3 of the Basic Computer
Animation Webinar Series and which was conducted by the Nueva Ecija University
of Science and Technology (NEUST) – Training Department on Thursday, September 21,
2022, at 8:00 AM. The master speaker for the webinar is an IT professor at
NEUST named Mr. Angelito I. Cunanan.
II. Reflections on the
webinar/activity give rise to (learnings)
This is the second webinar I attended that is hosted by
NEUST – Training Department with 3D being the last topic for their webinar
series. I am aware of this topic due to being a BSEMC student, I too had taken
3D classes and what the speaker discussed is very helpful for grasping the
basics of 3D Animation. First off, he mentioned about how different it is to
2D. Indeed, it is while you draw each frame for a 2D animation, in 3D you will
have a model that you are able to each joint and points to make a movement. This
makes me think about how 3D animated films are released more often these days,
because it’ll save more time and money and could be produced faster than 2D
animations and will still earn as much. The speaker also tackled the production
phase of 3D animation. It has similarity with 2D animation with slight
differences like how it’s all about the ideas, stories, storyboards, animatics
and design for the pre-production, the notable difference would be in the
production where in you create the models of the objects, people, etc. then
rigging them to be able to move. There’s a similarity on the post production
though because it’s about adding special effect, sound effects and experimenting
with different color schemes to set the mood of the production.
Next is the use of Blender. Blender is an open-source 3D software
that you can just go download from the blender website. It has come a long way as
a software as there are many improvements especially when Blender 3.0 arrived
that at some point it could break into the industry as it is used by a lot of
people to create 3D artworks, animations and games. He demonstrated a simple person
model that has a skeleton which you can move around to make different
movements. He even introduced the basic shortcuts in Blender as well as how
using simple objects can be turned into a more complex one. All of these things
are important to the introduction of 3D along the way, the more you often do
it, you’ll improve and it’ll get better each time and you’ll remember the keys
and shortcuts like the back of your hand. It just takes time and patience which
is the same with 2D, these are skills that if you just keep doing it for a long
time and mixed with passion in what you’re doing, you could create anything you
set your mind to.
III. Reflections on
possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a practical
level
(practical application
of learnings)
As an
animation student, in my eyes and how the world values animation because of how
you would see it everywhere. What I mean by this is that in movies, tv shows, ads
and commercials, social media content, scientific visualization, presentations
and so much more and which each time that I am learning I know that it becomes more
valuable because of how it has many uses to the world. Things that are helpful
for visualization catches the attention of people because instead of just words
on the screen, you can be creative in telling a story or advertising a product.
3D has improved so much since the past decade and it will remain as something
that is appreciated as a media for various things.
IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)
I am thankful for this event organization because of how much
information they give you even though it’s just a short amount of time. They
lay out to you the basics and the important things to remember which makes you
want to know more and you can do so by researching about the subject as there
are many materials out there and this webinar just peaked the interest of many
people including myself, because it is something that I am interested in. The
speaker as always seems to be someone who’s friendly to the audience but also
someone that knows that he’s talking about and clearly likes the topic that he
is discussing.
V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/consider for future activities
For
improvements, I’d say that there were many things that should have been
mentioned as well as making a simple object with colors and textures to let the
audience know more things that you can do within the process but alas he only
showed the use of simple 3D shapes and mushing them together but I think it’s because
of the lack of time so it is understandable that he wasn’t able to finish what he
was trying to demonstrate. Nevertheless, he discussed with passion and precision
and hope to have more webinars with the same speaker.
