Webinar Series on Basic Computer Animation Day 2: Webinar Series on 2D animation
Reflection Report #1
Webinar Title: "Webinar Series on Basic Computer Animation Day 2: Webinar Series on 2D animation"
I. Details of the event/activity
The webinar was titled” Webinar Series on 2D animation” which is Day 2 of their Basic Computer Animation Webinar Series and was conducted by the Nueva Ecija University of Science and Technology – Training Department on Thursday, September 15, 2022, at 8:00 AM. The master speaker in said seminar is Mr. Angelito I. Cunanan and is an IT professor at NEUST.
II. Reflections on the webinar/activity give rise to (learnings)
As a BSEMC student that is majoring in animation, this webinar was very helpful in recalling some of the basic things that you need to remember when it comes to animation but there was also additional info that I learned that further enhances my knowledge when it comes to 2D animation. I have taken animation classes and have used the same program as well so there was a familiarity with what is being discussed throughout the webinar. He discussed the forms of animation, production pipeline and principles of animation and used Adobe Animate to demonstrate the use of a program for animation. He said animation is not easy, and I agree with him because even if you have knowledge in drawing, it’s difficult when you’re going to bring life to those drawings and having to make sure every movement is precise, and the lines are clean, and every movement flows well. Animating is very time consuming as there are various steps that you need to take before getting the animating part and after animation there’s still some cleaning up to do and post processing so that everything from the beginning to the end are cohesive.
He mentioned about keyframes. Keyframes is the important actions inside an animation scene where you have to define the start and end point of an action. Extremes is when there’s a change of action in between the keyframes. Breakdowns are the action or drawings between the extremes and keyframes. The last part of the frames are the in-betweens where you add more frames to make the movement look smoother and is a way to adjust the timing of actions in animation. He mentioned all of that but it doesn’t end there because those are just the sketch animation or pencil test and there’s a lot of cleaning up to do which will be seen in the animation pipeline. As an animation student I should always be aware of these things and know that animating is never easy, it takes so much time and skill but at the end of the day you got to love what you do so that each process no matter how hard is you are able to do it and each time you keep on creating, you are improving and becoming more skilled and faster with what you do.
III. Reflections on possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a practical level
(practical application of learnings)
This webinar is definitely helpful to me because of the various process that you need to do in order to reach the final product. As someone who does animation and illustration, each step of the process is something I need to be able to do so that when I get out there, in the industry and doing future projects, I will be knowledgeable with the terms and how to do things and will be able to keep up. This webinar inspired me to just keep on trying, to keep expanding what I know, and everything is just really practice and patience if you want to make it through.
IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)
I thoroughly enjoyed this webinar, because not only was the speaker well informed with various topics in animation but he speaks in a way that you can enjoy, he adds a bit of entertaining things to say between teaching and make it that you be able to relate to the things that he is saying. It also helps that he speaks very clearly and simplifies the terms and topics so that you can understand it better without having to think what each thing means and left puzzled.
V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/consider for future activities
It was already a great webinar to begin with but if there’s any need for improvements, it’s that I was hoping there was some sample finished animation that to be shown in order to see and inspire people more about animation if they can see something like that. For other webinars, I hope they’ll be able to expand the topics even more and break down each component of what makes an animation or other multimedia related topics.
